Make Your Own Styling Boards

September 24, 2017 Melissa Glynn

I did a LOT of research on styling boards recently because I REALLY needed/wanted one (ten). After lots of research, I decided I needed to just make my own because it seemed so so simple! And, it is.

What you need...

  • 18x24 Canvas(I got mine at Micheal’s)
  • fabric
    • Any fabric you want to use, but I LOVE the look of linen. I got one of my fabrics from a local shop, but two of them (including the one photographed) I purchased from this awesome shop on Etsy. Sand Snow Linen.  I ordered a yard and it was more than enough. I think I could get three or four boards out of a yard depending on what size canvas you use.
  • staple gun
    • This one worked great!
  • scissors
    • Make sure you have really sharp scissors to get a good clean cut.

In total I spent about $90.00 and was able to make three beautiful boards. Most companies who sell styling boards this size sell them for over $100... So, to get three for less than one, amazing!

Here's how you do it!

Lay your fabric out and place your canvas on top. Cut your fabric about a 1.5 to 2 inches bigger than the canvas. Make sure the grain of the fabric is running the direction you want. Nothing worse than fabric that is angled, diagonal or running the opposite direction of what you want!

Iron fabric. (if necessary)

Lay fabric on top of the canvas.

Get your trusty staple gun ready! This is the one I used and it worked great. (even though the pups and I were on the verge of a heart attack every time it popped.)

I started with one of the shorter edges. Fold over the fabric on the edge in the middle and staple. This way you have a great starting point to keep everything centered.

Next, I made sure the fabric was straight and centered again by laying the canvas down flat and gently smoothing it out. Then I focused on the corners of that short first edge. I stapled each end and then worked my way along that edge back and forth with even staples.

Proceed to do that with the opposite edge. Then move on to the longer edges.

Next up, corners! I liked this approach since it seemed to make the corners look clean and tidy.

Pull the side straight. Fold over a third of the fabric and then fold over the the remaining on top of that. Now, you can do your corner however you like, but this is just the way I preferred. Staple to hold!

Go ahead and staple the fabric down in the back so you don't have loose goosey fabrics hanging out and causing problems.

And, viola! You've made yourself a super awesome and helpful styling board! So easy!!
